ACNE VULGARIS

Acne Vulgaris or pimples is an inflammatory skin disease in which the pilosebaceous follicles become oversensitive to normal levels of testosterone.

Main factors in pathogenesis are:

  1. Increased sebum secretion

  2. Irritation of the hair follicles of the skin due to irregular shedding of dead cells(follicular hyperkeratosis)resulting in blackheads and whiteheads.

  3. Building up of bacteria

Acne or pimples occur when there is plugging of hair follicles with oil and dead cells. Each hair follicle is connected to an oil gland or sebaceous gland. These glands secrete sebum which act as a lubricant for your skin and hair. When the body produces excess amount of sebum and dead skin cells, they accumulate in the hair follicle and cause acne.
